Corporate Profile
Milestone Scientific has developed and currently manufactures, markets and sells a proprietary, computer-controlled system for the improved and painless delivery of local anesthetic. The system is marketed in dentistry under the trademark "CompuDent" and in medicine under the trademark "CompuMed". CompuDent(TM) is suitable for all dental procedures. CompuMed(TM) is suitable for many medical procedures regularly used in Plastic Surgery, Hair Restoration Surgery, Podiatry, Colorectal Surgery, Dermatology, Orthopedics and a number of other disciplines. CompuDent and CompuMed are sold in the United States and worldwide in over 25 countries.
The company's products, CompuDent in the dental market, CompuMed in the medical market and the disposable component, the Wand® handpiece, were developed to penetrate the existing 150 year old syringe marketplace. This market has changed little since the introduction of the syringe, while the rest of medical science and technology have grown by leaps and bounds. CompuDent and CompuMed are computer-controlled infusion devices that provide a highly regulated rate of emission of anesthetics and other medications. This controlled infusion allows for a drop of anesthetic to always precede the needle tip during insertion., thus ensuring that the needle traverses already anesthetized tissue. The controlled flow also eliminates the "bee sting" effect, which is descriptive of the pain associated with a surge of fluids into tissue.
These devices utilize a common disposable component, The Wand® handpiece, which through its unique, patented ergonomic design, allows the practitioner tactile control during the injection. Combined with the variety of available drive units, the systems offer the practitioner a greater choice of types of injection administered. More freedom of movement, increased patient comfort, less anxiety (for both the patient and practitioner), higher efficacy rate, greater infection control and safety, and reduced potential liability are all attributes associated with its use. Recent studies have also indicated that the system will reduce the amount of anesthetic required, as the injection is site specific.
Milestone recently was granted broad patent protection on a safety-engineered sharps technology, which can be used as an adjunct to the Wand and also with other infusion devices, such as those used in intravenous procedures and in certain specialized injections. This market was created when the Federal Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act was passed into law in 2000.
The company was previously granted broad patent protection on a new technology that when commercialized, will provide Milestone with a strong entry into new markets, specifically the large and profitable hospital sector. CompuFlo is a computer-controlled, pressure sensitive infusion, perfusion, suffusion and aspiration device, which through touch screen technology, provides a real time readout of pressures, fluid densities and flow rates, that advances the delivery and removal of a wide array of fluids.
CompuDent and CompuMed have both gained recognition and accolades in clinical and other intellectual studies. Clinical studies have demonstrated the substantial advantages of using CompuDent and CompuMed. The CompuFlo, independently developed by Milestone Scientific, matches the current efforts of hospitals to reduce the high drug administration error rate. From efficacy, to pain reduction, to lowering of anxiety, to safety - all are answered by the company's products. The market trend is toward the products the company currently has, not away from them. By augmenting the marketing budget and implementation of this plan the company will be in the forefront of its market with products already demanded by the customer.
