About Milestone Scientific

Terms of Use . Privacy Policy

Milestone Scientific has developed and currently manufactures, markets and sells a proprietary, computer-controlled system for the improved and painless delivery of local anesthetic. The system is marketed in dentistry under the trademark "CompuDent" and in medicine under the trademark "CompuMed". CompuDent(TM) is suitable for all dental procedures. CompuMed(TM) is suitable for many medical procedures regularly used in Plastic Surgery, Hair Restoration Surgery, Podiatry, Dermatology, Orthopedics and a number of other disciplines.

The company's products, CompuDent in the dental market, CompuMed in the medical market and the disposable component, the Wand handpiece, were developed to penetrate the existing 150 year old syringe marketplace. This market has changed little since the introduction of the syringe, while the rest of medical science and technology have grown by leaps and bounds. In fact, the syringe is probably the only medical device used that is based on 150 year old technology.

The traditional syringe is large and clumsy and the mere sight of this device brings fear to most patients. With a traditional hypodermic syringe, the medication is driven into tissue using your thumb. This causes an uneven flow of medication to the site, as the thumb is unable to react to varied tissue densities. In addition, the hypodermic syringe leads to needle deflection, as the practitioner cannot rotate the needle while administering medication.

CompuDent and CompuMed are computer-controlled infusion devices that provide a highly regulated rate of emission of anesthetics and other medications. This controlled infusion allows for a drop of anesthetic to always precede the needle tip during insertion, thus ensuring that the needle traverses already anesthetized tissue. The controlled flow also eliminates the "bee sting" effect, which is descriptive of the pain associated with a surge of fluids into tissue.

CompuDent and CompuMed are sold in the United States and worldwide in over 25 countries. It is estimated that over 250 million dental anesthetic injections are given each year in the United States and 70 million medical anesthetic injections are given each year in the United States in procedures for which the systems are suitable. In addition, Milestone recently was awarded broad US patent protection on a safety-engineered sharps device, which can be used as an adjunct to the Wand and also with other infusion devices, such as those used in intravenous procedures and in certain specialized injections. This market was created when the Federal Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act was passed into law in 2000.
